The Mattress Is More Than a Place to Lie Down
Therapeutic mattresses are part of the clinical environment. They must support the patient while also being cleaned, disinfected, inspected, and maintained between uses.
Surface Contamination
Mattresses are reused from patient to patient and may be exposed to blood, body fluids, soils, and microorganisms.
Chemical Exposure
Repeated use of incompatible disinfectants can contribute to mattress-cover degradation and surface failure.
Complex Reprocessing
Manual cleaning can involve multiple surfaces, seams, components, dwell times, rinsing requirements, and manufacturer instructions.
Surface Integrity
A mattress that appears clean can still require inspection for cuts, tears, damage, or other conditions that may affect safe reuse.

Protection Without Giving Up the Therapy
Wound-care support surfaces are designed to provide specific pressure redistribution, airflow, immersion, and therapeutic performance. A protective system should not defeat those functions.
Soteria is manufactured from a breathable barrier textile designed to block fluids, soils, and microorganisms while allowing compatible mattress systems to continue operating.
A DIFFERENT APPROACH
Protect the Mattress Before Contamination Reaches It
Rather than relying only on manual disinfection after contamination reaches the support surface, Soteria adds a reusable physical barrier between the patient and the underlying mattress.
APPLY
A clean Soteria barrier is installed before patient use.
PROTECT
The barrier helps separate fluids and soils from the mattress and bed deck.
REMOVE
The used barrier is removed after the patient encounter.
REPROCESS
The barrier enters a controlled laundry, inspection, and return process.
VALIDATED REPROCESSING
Move Disinfection Into a Repeatable Process
Soteria is laundered after each patient using a commercial healthcare-laundry process incorporating detergent, high temperature, chlorine chemistry, rinsing, drying, and inspection.
After laundering, each barrier is inspected before being returned for reuse.

Protection Without an Observed Increase in Skin Injury
A Virginia wound-care poster reported infection-related improvement following implementation of the bed-barrier program and reported no increase in pressure-related skin injuries during the evaluation.
